18th Street Pedestrian Mall Bid #2

The 18th Street Pedestrian Mall Bid #2 project transformed the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District into a modern, pedestrian-oriented destination while preserving the cultural identity of one of Kansas City’s most significant historic corridors. The project included extensive watermain replacement, storm sewer improvements, streetscape reconstruction, decorative paving, specialty lighting systems, landscaped public spaces, traffic signal upgrades, pedestrian accessibility improvements, and restoration of the American Jazz Walk of Fame medallions. Construction occurred in the center of an active entertainment and cultural district containing museums, theaters, restaurants, businesses, festivals, and ongoing private development projects. Throughout construction, the team maintained pedestrian access, coordinated utility relocations, resolved unforeseen underground conflicts, accommodated numerous public events, and supported adjacent development activities. Through innovative scheduling, continuous stakeholder communication, and exceptional utility coordination, Gunter Construction successfully delivered a landmark public infrastructure project that enhances accessibility, supports economic development, improves public safety, and preserves the rich cultural heritage of the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District.
